AREA 51: UNUSUAL BUT TRUE CASES

The Biopsy Connection

A 65-year-old male has a 3-month history of a nonhealing lesion on the ear. Apparent upon examination are a left posterior tragus 2.5 x 2.5-mm pink macule with central crust and a left anterior auditory canal 3 x 3-mm pink crusted macule. Both sites are biopsied to rule out basal cell carcinoma. The histopathology turns out to be the same at both sites.

TOXIC ERYTHEMA OF CHEMOTHERAPY CALLED BY MANY NAMES

By: Sherry Boschert, Skin & Allergy News Digital Network
09/16/10

PASADENA, Calif. - Dermatologists tend to use too many different names for a single entity with a defined clinical spectrum - toxic erythema of chemotherapy.

"We have too many names for one disease," and this complicates clinical communication and decisions about management, Dr. jean Bolognia said at the annual meeting of the Pacific Dermatologic Association.

If dermatologists used the term "toxic erythema oc chemotherapy" (TEC), they would improve discussions with hematologists, oncologists, and internists, sais Dr. Bolognia, professor of dermatology at Yale University, New Haven, Conn. Other terms sometimes used in place of TEC include eccrine squamous syringemotaplasia and epidermal dysmaturation. While some alternative terms may be histologically accurate, they can be confusing to nondermatologists as diagnoses.
