PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Appropriate therapy for the psoriasis patient requires a tailored approach. Psoriasis treatment is rapidly evolving. The data supporting the use of both old and new medications for moderate to severe psoriasis has grown rapidly, increasing the sophistication of the treatment algorithm. Further, multiple newer agents are nearing FDA approval. Finally, recent studies support the contention that severe psoriasis is a systemic disease of inflammation that increases cardiovascular risk. Therefore, through either appropriate referral or treatment selection the dermatologist may be able to help prevent comorbidities that reduce life expectancy.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of this session, the participant should be able to:

1)
Cite the data regarding the use of biological and conventional therapy for the treatment of psoriasis and identify certain patient scenarios whereby there may be an increased benefit by using a biologic versus conventional therapy.
2)
Recognize co-morbidities that often exist in the context of psoriasis patients and develop appropriate management strategies in order to improve healthcare outcomes for your patients.
3)
Review the data for contraindications in psoriasis treatment and identify clinical cases where this data applies.
4)
Identify co-existing clinical states that, associated with psoriasis, may complicate the choice of effective therapy and implement therapy based on the most current evidence-based studies applicable to the specific setting.
